Friendzy’s SEL Program teaches the five core competencies of social and emotional learning.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) employs fundamental principles to support the development of vital social and emotional skills in young children. These skills are essential for discovering personal strengths, managing emotions, cultivating empathy towards others, and establishing and nurturing enduring and healthy friendships.

At its heart, SEL is a proactive approach to teaching the skills that help children grow into productive adults capable of maintaining positive relationships and overall positive well-being.

Here are the five core competencies of social and emotional learning woven into the fabric of our program.

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to understand personal emotions, thoughts, values, strengths, and weaknesses and how they influence behavior. Our social-emotional learning (SEL) program equips students with the skills they need to identify and understand their emotions while also emphasizing the influence these emotions have on those around them.

Self-Management

Self-management is the ability to control and manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviors without suppressing them. Instead, this SEL competency helps students learn how to delay gratification, manage stress, take initiative, and set and achieve goals.

By teaching the social-emotional skill of self-management, you can join the teachers who report a 36% increase in students’ self-control.

Responsible Decision Making

Responsible decision-making is the ability to make constructive judgments in social settings by analyzing data, facts, and other vital information. Students who demonstrate responsible decision-making are more likely to understand the short- and long-term effects of their choices, making them more likely to make decisions that have a positive impact on themselves and their community.

Social Awareness

Social awareness is the ability to understand and empathize with others. That means understanding historical, cultural, and social norms that cause the behaviors, thoughts, or emotions in other people.

Social awareness requires empathy, displaying concern for the feelings of others, and showing respect for those who are similar and those who are different. Lastly, students with strong social awareness SEL skills use 68% more emotional vocabulary than those without these skills!

Relationship Skills

Strong relationship skills mean students have the ability to form positive, healthy relationships with their peers, teachers, and administrators. This ability allows them to navigate the social or cultural demands in order to work effectively in teams and deal with conflict.

Healthy relationship skills are skills like good communication, self-reflection, and repairing relationships through conversation. Students who excel in relationships demonstrate gratitude, humility, and self-confidence.

Why Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is Important for Children

From problem-solving to academic achievement, the benefits of SEL for young people stay with them for life.

Child Development

SEL programs instituted at the preschool level help establish healthy brain architecture, which translates into healthy future behaviors, learning strategies, and good mental health. Young learners benefit from rapid neurological development with hands-on activities that enhance academic performance and prepare children for the demands of social interactions later in life.

Academic Success

Research shows that SEL programs help create a safe school climate characterized by increased levels of respect demonstrated towards teachers, administrators, and fellow students.  Students also have 24% more motivation for schoolwork and show a 20% increase in performance on standardized academic testing. These factors lower student dropout numbers and curbs violence in schools.

Mental Health

The pandemic had a significant negative impact on mental wellness. However, by introducing a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, we can assist students in recovering and regaining their equilibrium by facilitating the development and maintenance of friendships. By enhancing social skills, we can reduce the occurrence of depression, self-destructive behavior, and delinquent attitudes. Through social-emotional learning, students learn how to navigate their emotions and overcome their fear of seeking help during challenging times.

Long-Term Benefits

If it’s not obvious already, investing in SEL programming has long-term benefits, such as lower rates of alcohol, cigarette, and drug use as teens or young adults. SEL also sets students up for success in high school, college, and the working world. Long-term programs are also more effective than one-off or short-term programs, meaning students will only get better the more education they receive.
