What is a Five Finger Full Value Contract?

A full-value contract, also known as a full-value commitment, is a group agreement that outlines the set rules and expected behavior of that group. The Full Value contract framework emphasizes mutual respect and working together to create a culture that emphasizes keeping all group members physically and emotionally safe.

The Five Finger Full Value Contract provides scaffolding for the key components of an effective social contract. Each finger holds a specific meaning that is easy to remember. Every five-finger contract may vary, but the typical components include:

  • Pinky | Safety Our pinky finger is the smallest and most vulnerable finger. It reminds us to practice safety so that we keep ourselves and each other from getting hurt.

  • Ring Finger | Commitment The ring finger is historically where a ring goes to signify a specific commitment to yourself or someone else. It reminds us that we are committed to our classmates.

  • Middle Finger | Kindness: The middle finger reminds us to be kind and respectful to one another, doing our best not to put others down.

  • Pointer Finger | Responsibility: Did you know when you point your finger at someone, three other fingers are pointing right back at you? The Pointer finger reminds us to take responsibility for our actions instead of blaming others.

  • Thumb | You Can Do It! In many cultures, a thumbs-up is a gesture of approval. It can be a reminder to ourselves that we are capable of doing new and hard things, and it can be a reminder to encourage others when we recognize they need someone to cheer them on.
